Photo Essay: Oddities of Nature – Part 1
Today we look in to the wonderful world of animals. Specifically the strange side in our Friday Photo Essay.
This little fellow is called an Ajolote. He (or she I guess) is a reptile found in Mexico. Apparently his back legs were just slowing him down or getting in the way so he just needs the front ones. The Ajolote uses the front legs for digging because it lives underground.

This fur ball with eyes is called an Angora Rabbit. It’s a domestic breed meaning it doesn’t live in the wild. I doubt it would survive very long in the wild anyway. He probably couldn’t find anything to use as camouflage, other than maybe pretending to be a “dust bunny” under the bed.

These are baby birds. I believe they are Cockatiels. If you know what they are please post it in the comments section. All I know is they are the either very cute or very ugly depending on your perspective.

Next on the list of “things that make me glad to live in Ohio” is the Coconut Crab. It is the largest land-living arthropod in the world. Good for him, I hope we never meet. They hide during the day and come out only on some nights to forage. I’d like to know specifically what nights those are. Do they have a schedule they hand out? If so I want one.

Here is another mystery creature. It appears to be the larva of an insect or amphibian. Most likely amphibian because I would hate to see the size of the insect if this is its pre-metamorphosis stage. If you have any clue what this is please add your comments below.

This is a member of the crocodile family known as a Gharial or Gavial from Asia. The gavial sweeps its long, thin snout from side to side through the water. Then, with a quick snap, it grabs a fish.

This cute little guy is called the Dumbo Octopus because his ear-like fins make him look like Dumbo the Elephant.

Thank you for stopping by, be sure to visit next week for Part 2 of this series on the weird creatures of the world.

yes, those birds are cockatiels.
and as for that mystery animal, that is actually a photoshopped version of a much smaller common garden insect, the grub.

I would love to know if the crab is edible. Heaven!

actually, Mary s, that “garden grub” was not Photoshoped. Thoes are real. Its actually the larvae of the Dynastes hercules trinidadensis. Its a rarer specie of the giant hercules beetle. So before you start saying things just because its your assumption you should do some research so your not giving false information.
